Cold Weather Payment
Cold Weather Payments are automatic payments of £25 for each 7-day period when the temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, 0°C or below. The scheme runs from 1 November to 31 March each year. You do not need to apply — if you are eligible, the payment is made automatically.
You may be eligible if you receive one of the following: Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit, or Support for Mortgage Interest. Some people on Universal Credit need to meet additional criteria, such as having a disabled child element or limited capability for work element.
The temperature is measured at weather stations linked to your postcode area. If the criteria are met, the payment is triggered for everyone in that area who qualifies. You can receive multiple payments during a single winter if there are several cold spells. In a severe winter, this could amount to £100 or more.
Cold Weather Payments are separate from the Winter Fuel Payment and the Warm Home Discount — you can receive all three if you qualify. The payment does not affect any other benefits you receive and is not taxable. If you believe you were eligible during a cold spell but did not receive the payment, contact the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus.
