Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free payment to help with heating costs during winter. It is paid to people who were born before a qualifying date and are receiving Pension Credit or certain other benefits. The amount you receive depends on your circumstances and living arrangements.
Single people living alone may receive up to £200 or £300 (the higher amount for those aged 80 or over). If you live with someone who also qualifies, each person receives a reduced amount. Payments are usually made automatically between November and December each year — most people do not need to make a claim.
Following changes to eligibility criteria, the Winter Fuel Payment is now primarily targeted at pensioners receiving Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits. If you are over State Pension age and on a low income, it is worth checking whether you qualify for Pension Credit, as this would also give you access to the Winter Fuel Payment along with many other benefits.
The Winter Fuel Payment is separate from the Cold Weather Payment (£25 per cold spell) and the Warm Home Discount (£150 off electricity). You can receive all three if you qualify. The payment does not affect any other benefits and is not taxable.
