How to Claim Winter Fuel Payment

A guide to Winter Fuel Payment — covering who receives it automatically, who may need to make a claim, the qualifying week, how much you could receive, and related support for heating costs.

What is Winter Fuel Payment?

Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help with heating costs during winter. Following changes introduced in 2024, Winter Fuel Payment is now linked to receiving Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits. Previously, all households with someone over State Pension age received it automatically, but eligibility criteria have changed. The payment amounts are up to £200 if you were born between 23 September 1944 and 22 September 1958, and up to £300 if you were born before 23 September 1944. If you live with other people who also qualify, the payment may be split between you. The exact amounts may vary from year to year — check GOV.UK for the most current rates. Winter Fuel Payment is tax-free and does not affect your other benefits. It is usually paid automatically in November or December each year. You can spend it on whatever you need — there is no requirement to use it specifically for heating, though that is its intended purpose.

Who needs to claim and how

If you are receiving Pension Credit or certain other qualifying benefits (such as Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or Universal Credit), Winter Fuel Payment is typically paid automatically. You do not usually need to do anything — the DWP identifies eligible recipients and sends the payment to the bank account your qualifying benefit is paid into. If you believe you are eligible but have not received the payment, you can contact the Winter Fuel Payment helpline on 0800 731 0160 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). They can check your eligibility and help resolve any issues. Common reasons for not receiving an automatic payment include: a recent change of address, a recent change in benefits, or discrepancies in your records. Eligibility requires receiving a qualifying benefit during the "qualifying week" — a specific week in September each year (the exact dates are published on GOV.UK). If you were not receiving Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit during that week, you may not be eligible for that year's payment even if you start receiving the benefit later. This is why it can be particularly important to claim Pension Credit as early as possible — to ensure you are receiving it before the qualifying week.

Other help with heating costs

Winter Fuel Payment is just one form of help with heating costs. If you receive Pension Credit or certain other qualifying benefits, you may also be entitled to Cold Weather Payments — these are automatic payments of £25 for each 7-day period when the temperature in your area drops to zero degrees Celsius or below. You do not need to claim Cold Weather Payments; they are triggered automatically based on weather data. The Warm Home Discount provides a £150 annual reduction on your electricity bill. If you receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, you may receive this automatically from your energy supplier. Some energy suppliers also offer the Warm Home Discount to other low-income customers — check directly with your supplier. Your energy supplier may also offer additional support, such as priority services for vulnerable customers, energy-saving advice, or hardship funds. Many local councils and charities run schemes to help with heating costs — including grants for insulation, boiler repairs or replacements, and emergency fuel vouchers. The Home Energy Scotland helpline (0808 808 2282) and the Simple Energy Advice service (0800 444 202) can provide free, impartial advice on reducing your energy costs and accessing available support.
