Benefits for People with Disabilities in the UK

If you have a physical or mental health condition, sensory impairment, learning difficulty, or any other disability that affects your daily life, you may be entitled to a range of financial support. UK disability benefits are generally based on how your condition affects you, not on the condition itself. Many disability benefits are not means-tested, which means you can claim them regardless of your income, savings, or employment status. The support available covers extra costs of daily living, mobility needs, income support if you are unable to work, and help with housing and other expenses.

Extra Costs Benefits (PIP, AA, DLA)

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is the main disability benefit for working-age adults (16 to State Pension age). It helps with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability and is paid at up to £184.30/week. Attendance Allowance provides similar support for people over State Pension age, at up to £110.40/week. For children under 16, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) may be available. All three benefits are non-means-tested — your income, savings, and employment status do not affect your eligibility. You can work and claim these benefits.

Income Support When Unable to Work

If your health condition or disability limits your ability to work, you may be eligible for Employment and Support Allowance (New Style ESA) if you have sufficient National Insurance contributions, and/or Universal Credit which can include additional disability elements. Being assessed as having Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA) can significantly increase your entitlement. Receiving PIP can also increase your Universal Credit through the disability element and may exempt you from the benefit cap.

Additional Support and Concessions

Receiving a disability benefit can unlock a range of additional support. The Blue Badge scheme provides parking concessions if you have significant mobility difficulties. Council Tax Reduction may be available, and some properties qualify for a disability reduction on Council Tax if they have been adapted. If someone cares for you, they may be able to claim Carer's Allowance. You may also be eligible for help with energy costs through Cold Weather Payments and the Warm Home Discount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim disability benefits if I work?
Yes. PIP, Attendance Allowance, and DLA are all non-means-tested and can be claimed regardless of your employment status. You can work full-time and still receive these benefits. Employment and Support Allowance is specifically for people whose health affects their ability to work, but even this has rules around permitted work. Universal Credit is designed to support people both in and out of work.
What counts as a disability for benefit purposes?
Disability benefits such as PIP assess how your condition affects you, not what your condition is. Physical conditions, mental health conditions, sensory impairments, cognitive difficulties, learning disabilities, and chronic illnesses can all be relevant. The assessment looks at your ability to carry out everyday activities and move around. Both visible and non-visible (hidden) disabilities may qualify.
How do I challenge a disability benefit decision?
If your application is not successful or you disagree with the level of award, you can request a Mandatory Reconsideration within one month of the decision. If the decision is not changed, you can appeal to an independent tribunal. Around 25% of mandatory reconsiderations and approximately 60% of tribunal appeals result in a changed decision. You may find it helpful to get support from a local advice service.
